Clear the Clutter from Your Gutter! Top Tips for Maintaining Guttering
When did you last check the state of your guttering? Keeping your gutters clear of clutter can save you from costly repair bills as a build-up of grime can cause all sorts of problems.
Common causes of blocked gutters
One of the most common causes of blockages is fallen leaves, moss and other plant matter. Unfortunately, if you have trees close to the house, plant debris is unavoidable.
Water running down the side of your house when it rains is a sure sign of a blocked gutter. Another indicator is sagging gutters, which can occur when the gutter is weighed down by debris and standing water. Other causes of sagging are damaged brackets and rusty screws.
Leaking gutter joints are a frequent problem and can be caused by general wear and tear or plant debris stuck between the joints. Leaking gutters are a common cause of isolated damp areas in the home so if you spot any wet patches check your gutters to see if they are the root of the problem.
How to unblock your gutter
The easiest way is to use a professional gutter cleaning company to regularly clear your gutters as they will have all the appropriate equipment and a tall ladder. They will start by removing any large items of debris and then run water to clear away other accumulated grime.
If the blockage is in the downpipe, they'll use wire to make a hole in the middle of the debris before running water down the hole to clear away further mess.
If you clean your gutters yourself, make sure you don’t use metal scraping tools on synthetic materials such as UPVC as this can lead to further damage and more costly gutter repairs later on.
Regular guttering maintenance
A crucial time to clean your gutters is before winter sets in but after the autumn leaves have fallen. This will help prevent gutters from becoming blocked and then overflowing in wet weather or freezing in low temperatures. Blocked gutters are more vulnerable to damage than clean ones.
Another good time to do a check is in early spring as winter winds may have dislodged things or blown debris into your gutter. Also, make sure that your brackets haven’t come loose after snow fall or high winds.
If your property is surrounded by trees, it may be worth installing a gutter guard as this will act as a filter. The guard catches falling leaves and other debris and prevents it from reaching your gutter and downpipe but still allows water to flow through. Guards won’t stop every piece of debris from entering your guttering, but they will help certainly prevent larger items from causing damage.
Repairing damaged gutters
If your gutter joints are damaged, it’s vital to get them fixed as soon as possible. Removing a section of guttering and cleaning between the joint can sometimes resolve the problem, however, it’s best to call in the experts as any cracks will need to be sealed, whether you have cast iron, UPVC or aluminium gutters.

Need more space? Should you choose a conservatory or an extension?

Posted by Trevor Martin, TM Roofing & Building on 22 April 2017

Need more space? Should you choose a conservatory or an extension?
Both a conservatory and an extension will give you additional space, but which you choose depends on how this extra space will be used.
As well as the building regulations that need to be taken into consideration, you should also have a think about the long-term usage of the room and which option is likely to suit your lifestyle.
The pros and cons of conservatories
During the summer months, conservatories provide a light and airy space in which to entertain. With the doors open, they become an extension of your garden, and you can enjoy the best of both worlds – being indoors while still enjoying the outdoors.
However, with such a large expanse of glass, it’s tricky to find the right balance of heat and light. In summer, conservatories can become overheated and too bright, and in winter they can run up a hefty fuel bill if you want to keep them warm.
The key thing to consider with a conservatory is its location. East facing will give you sun in the morning while a west facing conservatory will provide plenty of evening sunshine. A north facing conservatory is likely to be cold; a south facing one could become uncomfortably warm on hot days.
Why choose an extension?
The cost of an extension is generally little more than a conservatory, depending on your plans, but this option offers a lot more functionality. With a well-insulated tiled roof and brick walls, there’s little additional cost in heating your extra space, and it can be used all year round in any capacity.
An extension gives you more flexibility when it comes to size and location. You can extend upwards into the roof, sideways or to the front or rear. You also get the choice of one or two-storey extensions.
The possibilities then become limitless. You could decide to open up your living room, expand your kitchen or even install a new bathroom. And, of course, garage extensions are always popular as they provide invaluable storage space as well as somewhere to put the car!
Enjoy your home
In the end, it comes down to personal choice and which option you think best suits your lifestyle. It may also depend on planning regulations and budget.
Both conservatories and extensions can add value to your home and provide more room. Generally speaking, a conservatory acts as a complement to a house that already has plenty of living space.
By contrast, an extension is a significant addition to a property and becomes an extra, serviceable room. It can significantly improve the way you use and enjoy your home and if you choose to move home, you can expect to see a greater return on your investment with an extension.
Are you considering extending your home?
What starts out as a simple idea can become complicated when you look into the different options of how to extend your property.
Building work could include single or two-storey rear, side or front extensions or a garage extension. If you’d like expert advice on what’s feasible, and what’s not, please give us a call on 01252 815719 and we can provide you with some options and a quotation on your home extension.

Where to begin with moss removal and roof maintenance?

Posted by Trevor Martin, TM Roofing & Building on 22 April 2017

Where to begin with moss removal and roof maintenance?
If you’ve looked at your roof recently and realised that it is in need of some attention, it’s important to take action sooner rather than later.
Prevention is better than cure, and if you ignore issues now, they can turn into expensive problems further down the line. Whether it’s a simple case or moss removal or a complete roof renovation, always call in the experts.
The right way to handle moss removal
You may not consider moss to be much of a problem, but it can end up blocking gutters, outlets and other drainage points on your roof.
There are many ways to remove moss, but some methods can damage tiles. For instance, some companies use abrasive substances, which can strip the outer seal from tiles and make them porous. Power-washing, especially when combined with unnecessary foot traffic, can result in cracked or broken roof tiles.
The best and most effective technique is to use a trowel and brush, which removes moss without causing damage to your tiles. Gently scraping and sweeping your roof will leave it looking as good as new.
This method can be used on sloping or flat roofs and will stop moss from becoming a problem.
Why flat roofs need more attention
While sloping roofs allow rainwater and debris to slide away, flat roofs capture and hold falling matter.
Hence, flat roofs do require a little more attention as leaves, water and other materials can accumulate over time. Eventually, this will cause damage to the membrane and could lead to leaks.
Plus, some flat roofs have been built with inadequate structural materials and begin to sag in the middle. This allows rainwater to form a pool, which can then find its way through any minute holes in the membrane.
Why you need regular roof checks
Proactive roof maintenance can save you a considerable amount of cash in the long-term as it prevents serious problems such as tile damage and leaks. From birds’ nests to insect infestations, all sorts of activity can be going on that you’re not aware of.
Things to look out for include:
Exterior and interior appearance of the roof, is there any surface deterioration or physical damage?
Damaged or missing tiles
Evidence of ceiling cracks and leaks
Condition of fascia and guttering
Puddles where water has collected
Damaged or missing flashing points
Types of roof maintenance
The most common kinds of roof maintenance undertaken include cement and lead works, strip and re-tile, new tiles, slate roofs, storm damage, felt roof repairs, chimney pointing, and installing new UPVC fascias and guttering.
In all cases, work should be carried out by a roofing expert, otherwise you run the risk of causing further deterioration to your roof.

Ever considered a garage to office conversion?

Posted by Trevor Martin, TM Roofing & Building, Fleet Hampshire on 14 April 2015

Working from home?  Need space to spread your wings?
A Garage to Office Conversion could be just what you need ……
When you moved into your house it, no doubt, was perfect for your needs at that time, and perhaps you already had a reception room or spare bedroom ear-marked for the home office.  Time ticks by, and children may come into the mix (bless them!) and at that point, your once tidy, ordered home becomes a closet for toys, computers, mobile devices, clothes, shoes and perhaps a pet or two.  If you feel family life is starting to encroach into your home office, or TV, computers and general noise is distracting you from your work, or you yearn to be able to shut that office door and not return until morning, then a Garage to Office conversion could be the perfect solution.
Imagine your home-office being totally separate from the family home, but just being a few steps away.  It is still extremely convenient.  It is your own refuge and workspace where you can be productive when you need to be, and can switch off and spend time with your family when that door is closed and locked for the night.
Great for you, your business and your family.  But not only that, it will have a positive impact on your lifestyle, and will also be a great investment for the future, costing much less than building an extension or moving home to a larger property.

TM Roofing are nominated for best builder award

TM Roofing & Building is a proud sponsor of the 2015 Welcome to Fleet Awards and we are delighted to have been nominated for an Award in the Best Building, Construction or Roofing Company Category.  This year is the first time roofing and building contractors have been given a category in the Awards, as the initiative was originally intended to help raise the profile of the High Street, which as many of us local people are aware, has seen a decline in trade with many outlets and long-serving businesses being forced to close in recent years.

Remember the Winter of 2014 - Get Roof Smart this Winter

Posted by Trevor Martin, TM Roofing & Building, Fleet, Hampshire on 8 December 2014

Remember the Winter of 2014?  Get Roof Smart this Winter
Get Your Gutter Clearance and Roof Inspections done BEFORE any bad weather arrives
We all hope that whatever is in store for us in 2015, it won’t be a repeat performance of the extreme weather we endured in the early months of 2014.
12 major storms hit the UK between December 2013 and February 2014, the stormiest period the UK has experienced for more than 20 years.  Throughout this period, the phones at TM Roofing were ringing off the hook.  Our staff worked tirelessly to respond to all enquiries, most of which were the result of storm damage to roofs or chimneys.  We have calculated that we received the same amount of enquiries between January to March 2014 as we had in the previous 10 months!
Hampshire and Surrey were hit pretty hard.  Homes and businesses suffered flooding as well as tree damage and structural building damage.  Many had water pouring in where their roofs had disappeared, from a single ridge tile lost to thousands of tiles missing.  Chimney stacks and walls that had never been a problem before, were now leaking like a dripping tap due to the unprecedented amount of continuous rain that fell.
What a start to the year!  We were mopping up the damage for another six months and what we achieved during this time was a result of TM Roofing’s hard working employees; from our brilliant support team in the office, to the guys on the roofs who worked in extremely challenging conditions, all extending their working day and working most weekends too.  It took until the middle of June before the phones noticeably slowed down and the enquiries changed from “can you help” to “I’m thinking of doing …”
So let’s get smart this winter – get your gutters and downspouts clear of leaves and debris to ensure your drain outlets don’t dam up and overflow as this can result in a loosening of the gutters as well as the pooling water causing wood to rot and sheet-metal ones to rust.
Roof inspections will highlight any preventative maintenance that is required on the roof, chimney stacks or fascias.
TM Roofing & Building are an established company in Fleet, Hampshire who offer excellent levels of service and high quality craftsmanship.  If you would like a roof inspection, or roof maintenance works undertaken, please call 01252 851719 to book a No Obligation inspection.  For further information on the services offered by TM Roofing & Building, please visit www.tmroofing.com
